Minutes of the ANC 1A Regular Meeting
held on September 9, 2009 at Tubman Elementary School, D.C.
Chairman Cliff Valenti called
the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Commissioners
present were: Lisa Kralovic
(1A01), Calvin Woodland (1A02), Luis A. Morales (1A03), William H. Jordan
(1A05), Samuel Johnson (1A06), Cliff Valenti (1A08), LaKeisha G. Thomas (1A09), Lenwood
Johnson (1A10), and Sandra Scottland (1A11). Commissioners Betty Pair (1A04) and Jaime Simcox (1A07) were absent. Approximately 30 persons
attended the meeting.
A quorum was declared, and the agenda was approved by
unanimous consent.
By unanimous consent, the commission approved the Minutes
of the June 10, 2009 ANC 1A Regular Meeting and the Minutes of the July 8, 2009
ANC 1A Regular Meeting.
The commission received and accepted a
Treasury’s Quarterly Report from Treasurer LaKeisha
Thomas.
The
commission received comments from the assembly under the Community Comments portion
of the meeting. Speakers included Sylvia Robinson, Hector Gomez, and Cmsr. Sam Johnson, who announced that he is resigning from
the ANC.
In
the Presentations portion of the meeting, the commission received remarks from
DC Voice (Education in the Community—Salvador Rivas), Cultural Tourism
(Columbia Heights Heritage Trail Update—Mara Cherkasky), Next Steps Public
Charter School (spokeswoman), and Daffodil House (Steve Seuser). By a unanimous show-of-hands, the commission
agreed to buy an ad (up to $500) to support the launch of the Columbia Heights
Heritage Trail.
Under
the Official Business segment of the meeting, the commission, by show-of-hands,
unanimously supported a voluntary agreement for Local 11; by show –of-hands,
unanimously supported a voluntary agreement for The Green Room; on a 7-to-1
roll call vote, opposed a curb cut request from the owner of 3577 Warder
Street; by show-of-hands, unanimously supported giving a letter of support for
Tivoli North Business Association’s installation of iron tree boxes along a
certain portion of 14th Street; heard a presentation from Central Union Mission
on its proposal to build affordable housing on Georgia Avenue; heard from Tynan Coffee & Tea, and by show-of-hands, rejected a
voluntary agreement for the business; by unanimous show-of-hands, agreed to
write a letter of support for the Carlos Rosario Charter School; by show-of-hands, agreed to award Columbia
Heights Village Together, Inc. a $500 grant; heard a resolution of support for
Park Morton tenants offered by Cmsr. Thomas (the
resolution was later withdrawn); and by show-of-hands, agreed to support the
Sweet Times Bakery Sidewalk Café.
